Best Combi Boilers: 5 Best Buys [And 5 To Avoid] in 2019

B

What is the best combi boiler? If you need a new combi boiler then you’ve come to the right place. Our in-depth guide will tell you what to look for and what to avoid like the plague and why Vaillant came out top (boiler) dog when buying a new combi boiler for your home in 2019.

You might not have even been aware that you had a boiler until it failed you. An insignificant white metal box hidden away in a cupboard of a room that you hardly ever use. Going on about its business in a determined and purposeful way.

Combi boilers aren’t really discussed at a dinner table like cars, football or music. Not everyone has their favourite and you don’t just have a passing knowledge of it as you would do with cars or famous people.

So what makes a combi boiler the best? Is it the boiler size? The boiler brand? Maybe how efficient it is? How many awards has it won? Is the boiler popular in engineer surveys?

Our early spoiler has already let you in on the winner: Vaillant boilers. But there’s so much more to it than the brand. There’s the size of the boiler for a start. What’s god for a 1 bedroom flat doesn’t work quite so well for a 3 bedroom house.

OK, let’s start with the official list. Here are our top 5 best combi boilers in the UK in 2019:

  • #1 Vaillant Combi Boilers
  • #2 Viessmann Combi Boilers
  • #3 Intergas Combi Boilers
  • #4 Worcester Combi Boilers
  • #5 Heatline Combi Boilers

#1 Vaillant Combi Boilers [Best]

Best Combi Boiler Vaillant

The Vaillant Group employs 13,000 people worldwide with an annual turnover of approximately 2.5 billion euros.

This makes the Vaillant Group one of the largest companies in its sector in Europe. They’ve been building boilers for over 100 years. That, coupled with their unrivalled build quality and attention to detail has helped them become a household name synonymous with reliability.

The company is still one-hundred per cent family-owned today.

Vaillant does consistently well on our ‘best boiler voted for by 74,000 registered gas engineers’ survey. In fact, the boiler scores top 3 in most categories.

More on our survey: We questioned 74,000 registered gas engineers on which boiler they would recommend. We’ve got the definitive answer to ‘what is the best boiler’ right here: https://www.newboiler.co.uk/best-boiler-survey/

Vaillant is a favourite of ours because they haven’t yet compromised on the quality of parts they are using on the inside of their boilers. Worcester, for one, is replacing once metal parts with cheaper plastic – and it’s having a huge effect on the number of breakdowns we are attending.

Oh, did we mention it has a Which? Best Buy Award across the WHOLE range? No wonder it’s one of a very, very few boiler manufacturers to offer 10 years parts & labour warranty.

Vaillant ecoFIT Pure Combi Boiler

The Vaillant ecoFIT Pure range is the one you need to consider if your boiler is going to be fitted into a kitchen cupboard. There are 3 boilers in the Vaillant ecoFIT Pure range: 825, 830 and 835. All three of these boilers measure H 70 D 30 W 39 meaning they will comfortably fit inside a kitchen cupboard.

Vaillant ecoTEC Pro Combi Boiler

The Vaillant ecoTEC Pro is available in three kW outputs suitable for any property up to 3 bedrooms requiring a new boiler. The Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 30 is the trusted workhorse of the Vaillant family and probably one of the most popular individual models in the UK’s combined boiler market.

The price of Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 30 is on par with boilers that don’t even scratch the surface of Vaillant quality and high component standards – the most important being the stainless-steel heat exchanger (essentially the heart of the boiler and something that’s likely to break in other, lesser, boilers).

Did you know a replacement heat exchanger can cost upwards of £400? Premium parts in the Vaillant will keep everything running smoothly and reliably ensuring you avoid out of warranty costly repairs.

Vaillant ecoTEC Plus Combi Boiler

The only thing Vaillant can be accused of is lacking imagination when naming their boiler ranges. Fortunately for them, their quality does all the talking. The Vaillant ecoTEC Plus, with its varied range of outputs, has a boiler that is suitable for every type of home.

Again, this boiler has that all-important stainless-steel heat exchanger, delivering not only high performance, control and efficiency, but reliability as well.

With its easy to see backlit display, premium components and Quiet Mark accreditation it ticks all the right boxes. Hot water flow for this range goes from a steady 10.5 litres per minute up to 15.9 litres per minute – enough for a home with high hot water demands.

Heating demands are also catered for. The Vaillant ecoTEC Plus 838 has a heat output of 38.7kW – enough power to heat 20 radiators.

If Vaillant really is the best combi boiler, why are they so cheap?

Our business model is quite unique in that we do not have salesmen working on a 10% commission basis. We won’t send someone to visit your home in a company car, eating your biscuits, drinking your tea and giving you horrendously expensive boiler installation quotes.

And, due to the number of units we fit, we are able to source our boilers much cheaper than your local one-man-band.

That’s the price covered.

As accredited Vaillant partners, we are able to offer unrivalled 10-year parts and labour warranties on all Vaillant boiler models.

That’s the reliability covered.

Awards?

From Vaillant’s own blog:

Vaillant are delighted to announce they have won Which? Best Buy 2018 award for their entire range of combination, system and open vented domestic boilers.

#2 Viessmann Combi Boilers [2nd Best]

Best Combi Boiler Viessmann

Viessmann is already a huge force in the European boiler domestic and commercial market. Established more than 100 years ago in Germany, it’s relatively new to the UK market when compared with the more established Vaillant brand.

The Viessmann Group has 23 production companies in 12 countries and employs 12,000 people around the world. This makes it one of the leading global players in the manufacture of heating, industrial and refrigeration systems.

Viessmann came to the UK in 1989 and have since pretty much taken the UK boiler market by storm. They train approximately 2,500 installers and contractors each year across the UK alone.

According to our survey of 600 engineers, the brand is particularly well-loved by engineers (the ones in the know), scoring consistently well in areas such as build quality and value for money.

More on our survey: We questioned 74,000 registered gas engineers on which boiler they would recommend. We’ve got the definitive answer to ‘what is the best boiler’ right here: https://www.newboiler.co.uk/best-boiler-survey/

As with Vaillant boilers, Viessmann is a favourite of ours because they haven’t compromised on the quality of parts they are using on the inside of their boilers. Worcester, for one, is replacing once metal parts with cheaper plastic – and it’s having a huge effect on the number of breakdowns we are attending.

Oh, did we mention both the Vitodens 050-W and the Vitodens 100-W range won the Which? Best Buy Award? No wonder it’s one of a very, very few boiler manufacturers to offer 10 years parts & labour warranty.

Viessmann Vitodens 050-W Combi Boiler

The Vitodens 050-W is the workhorse of the Viessmann family and is available in two kW outputs making it suitable for any home requiring a new boiler.

As with Vaillant, the price of a Viessmann boiler is very competitive whilst maintaining quality and high-end component parts. Integral to the reliability of Viessmann is the stainless steel heat exchanger which has been added to this model to ensure hassle-free heating and hot water for years to come.

The Vitodens 050-W also boasts a Which? Best Buy award which proves its popularity with installers and homeowners alike.

Viessmann Vitodens 100-W Combi Boiler

All of the Vitodens 050-W and more packed into this powerful boiler, making it perfect for any home. The 100-W is a very popular choice for homeowners with 3-4 bedrooms.

A regular endorsement from Which? for its high-end components, an A-rated efficiency class, back-lit LCD display, low fan speed for quiet operation and low CO2 emissions help make this a wise, cost-effective and carbon footprint conscious choice.

Viessmann Vitodens 200-W Combi Boiler

The Vitodens 200-W is perfectly suited to larger detached and semi-detached homes. It has all the upgraded features of the boilers before it but also boasts a colour touch screen display, smart thermostat compatibility and an incredible 98% efficiency rate.

Simply put, the Vitodens 200-W meets every demand a boiler buyer could possibly have of their combi boiler.

Viessmann Vitodens 111-W Combi Boiler

The constant theme with Viessmann boilers is that you’re assured of quality. The Vitodens 111-W is no exception with its enormous hot water storage capacity capable of delivering an outstanding 18 litres of hot water per minute.

If you’re lucky enough to live in a larger home and you have a very high hot water demand and you prefer combi boilers, this is the one for you.

Should I buy a Viessmann combi boiler?

If you’re after premium quality at a very competitive price then a Viessmann combi boiler is for you. The high-quality boiler components are backed up by a parts and labour warranty of up to 10 years, on par with the Vaillant boiler mentioned above.

Viessmann has also been awarded Which? Best Buy awards for six of its boilers, two of which are combi boilers: the Vitodens 050-W 29 kW Combi and the Vitodens 100-W 30 kW Combi.

Viessmann also does consistently well on our ‘best boiler voted for by 74,000 registered gas engineers’ survey. The boiler scores well in almost all categories.

#3 Intergas Combi Boilers [3rd Best]

Intergas enter the list of premium boiler brands and this is one we love to recommend, for many reasons.

Best Combi Boiler Intergas

Intergas boilers scored consistently well on our ‘best boiler voted for by 74,000 registered gas engineers’ survey. The boiler scores well in all of the service and recommendation categories and is a clear winner in the ‘Installer recommended combi boiler on a medium budget category’.

More on our survey: We questioned 74,000 registered gas engineers on which boiler they would recommend. We’ve got the definitive answer to ‘what is the best boiler’ right here: https://www.newboiler.co.uk/best-boiler-survey/

It’s fair to say that this boiler is up there with Vaillant and Viessmann when it comes to reliability. Installers love them because they’re so easy to fit and because they only have 4 working internal parts, there’s less to go wrong. Not that we’ve ever heard of one breaking down.

So, what makes them so special?

Only 4 working parts. Fewer parts mean more reliability. Every Intergas Rapid boiler features a unique back-to-back, two-in-one heat exchanger that reduces heat loss and delivers the optimum heat transfer for exceptional economic performance.

Intergas have cleverly separated the circuits for heating and hot water meaning there’s no need for a diverter valve – a part that can go wrong very quickly and one that is difficult to replace on most combi boilers.

Engineers just love fitting them.

Intergas Rapid Combi Boiler

Probably Intergas’s best selling boiler, the Rapid is ideal for properties with 1-3 bedrooms. The model comes in a 25kW output rating (ideal for 1-2 bedroom properties) and a 32kW output rating (ideal for a 3 bedroom property).

The Rapid model is offered with a 3-year warranty which is OK, if not great. For an extra 3 years on top, you’ll have to turn your attention to the Rapid Plus which we preview below.

Intergas Rapid Plus Combi Boiler

The Rapid Plus model is exactly the same as the Rapid model but comes with 6 years warranty instead of 3.

Intergas ECO RF Combi Boiler

The ECO RF is a new generation of smart boiler. Intergas have fitted a radio frequency module as standard in this range of boiler. The module enables your installer to monitor boiler performance remotely and take appropriate action.

The ECO RF model is compatible with Honeywell’s wireless room thermostats for quick response to changing demands. Intergas claim this reduces the amount of energy it takes to reach the required temperature, further increasing its efficiency.

So, is an Intergas the boiler for you?

Intergas is one of four premium combi boiler makes that we recommend. It ranks as the 3rd best boiler for two main reasons.

Firstly, the boiler is ultra-reliable like the Vaillant and Viessmann brands. Secondly, we think Intergas have priced their boilers very very competitively.

If you think you can make do without the full 10-year warranty on parts and labour that both the Vaillant and Viessmann offer, then this boiler should be on your shortlist of boilers to consider.

#4 Worcester Combi Boilers [4th Best]

Well known, trusted and a giant of the industry, the Worcester boiler is synonymous with quality and reliability. Or at least it was until recently. We just feel like quality is slipping a little and that might just be due to Worcester taking their eye off the ball.

Is Worcester saving money by using cheaper parts?

Best Combi Boiler Worcester

We feel so. Replacing premium parts with cheaper, foreign-made plastic parts isn’t something we feel Worcester should be doing. It feels a little like they are resting on their laurels and trying to get by on their reputation.

Worcester is rightly in 4th place in this list. We feel they are good enough to make this list but not good enough to displace the 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the list.

Worcester is the third and final combi boiler to be given a Which? Best Buy award proving they still have that star appeal.

However, not every Worcester is a winner…

Worcester Greenstar i Combi Boiler

The Greenstar 30i is by far Worcester’s best selling boiler with over a million fitted in homes throughout the UK. However, do be wary of the 25i and 30i models in particular – they aren’t known for their reliability. If you think you’ve found yourself a bargain, think again.

The other downfall of these boilers, in our opinion, is the heat exchanger. Where the Greenstar’s rivals have bullet-proof stainless steel heat exchangers, this one is built of aluminium. So, whilst it will last for a few years at least limescale will eventually clog the insides of the heating element and you’ll be complaining about the loss of hot water temperature over time.

Talking about limescale, if your boiler is quite old and just isn’t heating up hot water like before you can bet it’s the heat exchanger on it’s way out.

The problem with a smaller 25i or 30i is, whilst it will be OK in the summer months when mains hot water coming in is at a good temperature, you’ll notice the difference in the winter and you’ll wish you’d gone for a boiler with a higher flow rate.

Worcester Greenstar Si Combi Boiler

Similar to the Greenstar i Combi Boiler in specification. The ‘S’ just means it can fit in a cupboard which is great if your boiler is in the kitchen cupboard for example, great if you want to have your boiler hidden out of sight.

Worcester CDi Classic Combi Boiler

A very good boiler and according to Worcester themselves, their top of the range boiler. If your heart is set on a Worcester boiler then this is the one you should probably get, although naturally, it comes with a hefty price tag which puts a lot of people off.

Worcester CDi Compact Combi Boiler

Another top of the range boiler from Worcester. The compact model means it fits snugly inside a cupboard out of sight whilst still maintaining outstanding efficiency. The Which? Best Buy award-winning boiler has enough power for homes with two bathrooms.

Worcester CDi Highflow Combi Boiler

This beast of a boiler is so big it has to sit on the floor. The industry-leading hot water flow rates make it great for large homes with multiple bathrooms that don’t want to have an additional hot water cylinder fitted. The price might be offputting but if money is no object, you’ll be very pleased with the performance.

So, is a Worcester the boiler for you?

Worcester is, without a doubt, a great brand of boiler – otherwise, it wouldn’t be 4th on our list of ‘best boilers’. A Worcester will most likely come with a 7-year warranty as well if you’re using an approved installer.

But if you’re just after a Worcester for the sake of having a Worcester, don’t be too surprised at the lack of quality for such a premium brand. There are two better boilers brands (Vaillant and Viessmann) and they’re cheaper too.

#5 Heatline Combi Boilers [5th Best]

Heatline Logo

Last but definitely not least comes the Heatline Combi boiler at a heady 5th best boiler as recommended by us.

First, let’s be absolutely clear, this is very much a budget boiler retailing at half the price of the equivalent (if there is an equivalent when comparing budget with premium) entry-level Vaillant Combi boiler.

This is the boiler we recommend when money is very tight and you aren’t able to pay using finance. This boiler is ideal for short term rental portfolios where the plan is to sell in the short to medium term.

Whilst it’s a very good boiler at a very good price, there are alternatives such as Vaillant, Viessmann and Intergas available for a few hundred pounds more. Remember: boiler installation costs always stay the same regardless of which boiler you opt for in the end.

So, with that in mind, let’s discuss the Heatline combi boiler.

Heatline has been manufacturing heating equipment for over 50 years. It might surprise you to learn that they are part of the Vaillant Group. Their new Capri Plus range of condensing boilers comes with a 2-year guarantee as standard.

Heatline rated as the 3rd best installer recommended combi boiler on a small budget in our comprehensive survey. In first and second was Ideal and Main.

The Ideal and Main are not only much more expensive but in our opinion inferior products. The Ideal brand received 9.1% of votes, the Main brand received 8.8% of votes and the Heatline received 8.4%. Next best was Glowworm with just 6.8% of votes.

More on our survey: We questioned 74,000 registered gas engineers on which boiler they would recommend. We’ve got the definitive answer to ‘what is the best boiler’ right here: https://www.newboiler.co.uk/best-boiler-survey/

Heatline only offers one make and model of boiler but helpfully offer two variations: the 24kW and 28kW model.

The Capriz2 24kW delivers 10 litres of hot water per minute making it ideal for smaller properties such as 1-2 bedroom flats. The Capriz2 28kW is suitable for properties with up to 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.

So, is a Heatline boiler the one for you?

If you’re a landlord looking to sell a property on pretty quickly or doing a quick renovation with a view to turning around a profit, this could be the boiler for you.

Because installation costs will be the same regardless of which boiler you opt for, it makes sense spending a few hundred pounds more. We’ve included the Heatline boiler in our Top 5 boiler list because it simply offers value for money.

If we could only recommend one boiler and were forced to install that forever, we would definitely go for either the Vaillant or the Viessmann. The only difficulty would be deciding on which one.

Which combi boiler is best for my home?

Combi boilers are suitable for all homes from tiny little studios to large 6 bedroom detached homes.

If you’re lucky enough to own a mansion with more than 6 bedrooms or have 3+ bathrooms, we reckon you’d be better off looking for an alternative. For homes this large you’ll need to get quotes for a new system or regular boiler. They store water in tanks or cylinder separately from the boiler and feed water outlets at an even rate. If you tried to run 3+ baths at the same time using a combi boiler, you’d find barely warm water just trickling out.

So, let’s take a look at which models are best. Here’s a quick look at which combi boiler is best for your home in 2019:

Best combi boiler for a small flat/apartment

Best Boiler: Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 24

Best Boiler Size: 23.4kW

A great little boiler ideally suited to a smaller property. Backed up by 10-year parts and labour warranty what’s not to love about this boiler? It’s so good we decided to write an in-depth review – check it out here.

Best combi boiler for a 2 bedroom house

Best Boiler: Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 24

Best Boiler: Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 30

Best Boiler Size: 23.4kW

If you’re the owner of a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom property we advise opting for the Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 30 model. It delivers plenty of hot water at 12.3 litres per minute. This is the more powerful 30kW boiler which will mean hot water even in the cold winter months when the incoming mains water is at it’s coldest. You also get 10-years parts and labour warranty for this boiler. Read our review or our guide on the ‘Best Combi Boilers for 3 Bedroom House‘.

Best combi boiler for a 4 bedroom house

Best Boiler: Viessmann Vitodens 050-W

Best Boiler Size: 35kW

A premium boiler with low running costs. Ideal for a 4 bedroom 1 bathroom property with 14.3 litres of hot water per minute. If it’s good enough for the Queen at Buckingham Palace, then it’s good enough for us.

Best combi boiler for a 5+ bedroom house

Best Boiler: Vaillant ecoTEC Plus 838

Best Boiler Size: 38.7kW

Enough power for a larger home. One of Vaillant’s more powerful boilers with a heat output of 38.7kW, this is a top of the range boiler. You will get 15.9 litres per minute of hot water which is enough to run 2 hot water outlets at the same time. You’ll also be able to fill up a bath very quickly.

Which? are unique in that they are completely independent. They have no owners, shareholders or government departments to answer to and they don’t offer advertising either.

In our opinion, the depth and quality of their boiler consumer satisfaction surveys make them undeniably well informed

Extra special products manage to secure themselves a Which? Best Buy Award, with three lucky boiler manufacturers earning that privilege; Vaillant, Viessmann and Worcester.

Why a combi boiler, what makes them the best?

If you don’t already have a combi boiler you might be feeling a little left out. You might be wondering what all the hype is about? But, we can reliably inform you that a combi boiler lives up to the hype.

A combi boilers main job is to heat hot water up instantly, on-demand, when you want it. Quicker and easier than having to give a hot water cylinder an hours notice before having a bath. Makes sense so far?

But a combi isn’t just going to make your life easier. It’s going to save you a lot of money in reduced energy bills as well. It’s remarkably efficient at heating hot water – 98% efficient to be exact.

They’re also much kinder to the environment as well.
